Dr. Adán Colón-Carmona is a professor and biologist at University of Massachusetts in Boston. His lab researches how plants grow in response to stressful environments. He and his students study how plants can reduce pollution. Specifically, they study “how plants respond to and can degrade petroleum pollution, how they interact and collaborate with microbes such as bacteria to grow better in harsh environments, and how plants create new organs when new organs are needed for better health.”

Dr. Colón-Carmona has a diverse research team, who he teaches and mentors. He says: “Two of the most rewarding things about my job are being able to decide what to scientifically study in the lab and having the ability and opportunity to have an impact on society through my science and interactions with students, who will be the future scientists.”

Dr. Colón-Carmona also serves on the board of SACNAS, and is active in outreach and diversity efforts.
